AI/AN Medical School Applicant Workshop

The AI/AN Medical School Application Workshop aims to prepare American Indian and Alaska Natives to apply to medical school. The goal of the workshop is to 1) help AI/AN students put together a successful medical school application and 2) give them the opportunity to practice skills that will be tested during their interview day.

The workshop is led through a partnership with several medical schools on the west coast; University of Washington School of Medicine, Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, University of California Davis School of Medicine, and Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine.

A key component of the workshop is the introduction to other AI/AN students and regional A/IAN leaders in medicine. Participants become part of a community that shares a passion for medicine from an Indigenous perspective. Follow NNACoE social media for updates and reminders!

The Objectives of the AI/AN Medical School Applicant Workshop are to:

  1. Gain an understanding of how the medical school admissions process works

  2. Learn about the medical school interview experience and practice the MMIs

  3. Receive one-on-one feedback on how to write an effective personal statement and request letters of recommendation

  4. Learn of additional resources that exist for AI/AN medical students with sessions such as an ANAMS panel, medical student panel, Wy'east presentation (sessions vary year from year and is dependent on presenters' availability)

  5. Discuss the nuances of navigating western dominated medical school as an AI/AN

Eligibility

The AI/AN Applicant Workshop is intended for American Indian/Alaska Natives who intend on applying to medical school in one or two years.

To be eligible for the AI/AN Applicant Workshop, the following criteria is strongly recommended:

  1. Possess a completed personal statement - you will need this to complete your application to the workshop. Changes to your personal statement will not be allowed once your application has been submitted. We recommend having your personal statement be reviewed by at least one person prior to submitting. 

  2. Have some familiarity with the medical school interview process (eg. mulitple mini interviews, AMCAS, writing a personal statement, etc.)

  3. Have previously taken the MCAT or have taken practice MCAT tests

  4. You must be able to virtually attend the entirety of the workshop. This can make for a long day; please plan ahead.
